5-Step eSIM Setup Guide: How to Install, When to Activate
Transitioning to an eSIM is akin to transitioning from a physical DVD to Netflix: it's significantly more convenient, but you must understand which "buttons" to press to initiate the stream. You no longer have to fumble with tiny plastic cards or search for a needle to open your phone.
But then you actually go to set it up, and that’s where questions usually start.
When should you install it?
Will it activate right away?
What if something doesn’t connect?
Most of the confusion comes from one simple thing people miss: installation and activation are not the same.
You can install your eSIM at any time.
Activation only happens when it connects to a supported network, usually when you arrive at your destination.
That’s why the safest approach is straightforward: install it before your trip and let it activate when you land.
Whether you're preparing for a trip or switching carriers, here is how to set up your Keepgo eSIM in 5 easy steps. Additionally, consider our recommendations for eSIM activation to get your eSIM up and running without the headache.
Step 1: Compatibility Check
It sounds obvious, but it’s still the step people skip.
Not every phone supports eSIM, and even if it does, it might be locked to a carrier.
There are two generally accepted methods of checking your device’s eSIM compatibility:
- The quick dial: open your phone app and dial *#06#. If you see an EID number on the screen, your phone has an eSIM chip inside.
- The lock check: in your settings (under "About Phone" or "Carrier Lock"), ensure it says "No SIM restrictions." If your phone is locked to a specific carrier, a third-party eSIM won't work.
Step 2: Don’t Start Without a Stable Connection
An eSIM isn’t something you insert. It’s something your phone downloads.
Which means your internet connection matters more than people expect.
Trying to install it on a weak signal or unstable Wi-Fi is one of the most common reasons for setups to fail halfway through. It’s a small detail, but it saves time if you get it right from the start.
Step 3: Installing the eSIM
This is the core step, and it’s simpler than it looks.
After purchase, you receive an email with the installation details: a QR code, a direct link, and manual activation data.
Most people go with the QR code:
- On iPhone, it’s under Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
- On Android, it’s under Network & Internet → SIMs
You scan the code, confirm a few prompts, and the eSIM is added to your device.
If you’re on a newer device, there’s often an even easier option: a direct installation link from your account that installs the eSIM automatically.
And if scanning isn’t possible, you can always enter the details manually using the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
There’s nothing complicated here, but one thing is worth remembering: the QR code works only once.
If the eSIM is removed later, it usually can’t be installed again in the same way.
Step 4: Label Your Lines
Don't let your phone get confused. When prompted, give your new eSIM a nickname like "Travel data" and keep your original SIM as "Home." * Set your Cellular Data to the "Travel" line.
- Keep your Default Voice Line on "Home" to keep receiving your usual texts (but watch out for roaming fees!).
Step 5: Activate eSIM upon Arrival
If you bought this for travel, it might not "activate" until you arrive. The eSIM will work only when it connects to a mobile network in its coverage area. If you install the eSIM outside of the coverage area, you can connect to a network when you arrive.
- Once you land: go to settings and turn the eSIM line ON.
- Enable Data Roaming: for most travel eSIMs to work, you must toggle "Data Roaming" to ON for that specific eSIM (but keep it OFF for your home SIM!).
Stuck? 80% of eSIM issues are solved by a simple Restart. If it’s not connecting, turn your phone off and back on to force it to "handshake" with the new local network.
A Few Practical Notes (That Usually Save Time)
Different devices handle things slightly differently.
- On iPhone, you can manage both lines easily and even allow automatic switching between them.
- On Android, installation works best when the SIM Manager is up to date, and sometimes APN settings may need a quick check if the connection doesn’t start right away.
One Last Thing
Please avoid removing the eSIM once it’s installed.
In many cases, it can’t be reinstalled later, so what seems like a quick fix can turn into a bigger issue.
